The Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris are delighted to announce the opening of the exhibition En Scène: Yves Saint Laurent. Costumes and Décors for Ballet, Theater and Cabaret, featuring drawings by the couturier, which opened at the Fondazione Nicola del Roscio on December 6, 2024.
The exhibition reflects an ongoing loan policy aimed at disseminating the work of Yves Saint Laurent internationally.
The exhibition, which is on view through March 7, 2025, has been curated by Stephan Janson. It offers a new approach to understanding the couturier’s genius and talent by exploring his work as a costume and set designer for the ballet, theater and cabaret.
The sixty drawings on display represent sets and costumes as imagined by the couturier, from the ballet Cyrano de Bergerac in 1959 to the 1978 staging of The Eagle with Two Heads by Jean Cocteau at the Théâtre de l'Athénée in Paris. The cabaret world is also present, as seen through numerous sketches of the Spectacle Zizi Jeanmaire, which premiered in November 1963 at the Teatro Eliseo in Rome.
The legendary dancer Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya said that wearing a costume by Yves Saint Laurent allowed her to fully enter into her character. Catherine Deneuve has many times affirmed that the couturier’s creations for Belle de jour greatly contributed to embodying her role as the film’s protagonist, Séverine Serizy.
En Scène: Yves Saint Laurent. Costumes and Décors for Ballet, Theater and Cabaret is the first time an exhibition devoted to Yves Saint Laurent has been mounted in Italy. That it has been organized in Rome, and in particular at the Fondazione Nicola Del Roscio, set within the walls of the former Teatro Florida, is a befitting homage to the love that the couturier felt for the performance world.
Established in September 2019, the Fondazione Nicola Del Roscio reflects the desire of its president, Nicola Del Roscio, to mount exhibitions by internationally renowned artists and to offer a vibrant program of literary events, musical performances and film screenings.
The exhibition En Scène: Yves Saint Laurent. Costumes and Décors for Ballet, Theater and Cabaret has been organized by the Fondazione Nicola Del Roscio in partnership with the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Paris.
The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
