This exhibition displayed sixty costumes from the princely courts of India dating back to the end of the Raj, a period when ceremonial dress became the official language of courtly life. The last Maharajas, whom the British had knocked off their powerful pedestal, cultivated opulence and vied to outdo each other for the most grandiose image.
