In 1962, Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn began their collaboration with Giselle, which received twenty-three curtain calls when it premiered. Just as she was about to end her dance career, Fonteyn decided to continue performing alongside the young Russian dancer despite a nearly twenty-year age difference. They met and befriended Yves Saint Laurent in 1965. The couturier would go on to dress Fonteyn both onstage and offstage.
