Acquisition of the Librairie des Colonnes

The Librairie des Colonnes in Tangier has been a symbolic place for literature in Morocco since 1949. Established by the Gerofi family, it was frequented by many great authors, including Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, Juan Goytisolo, Tennessee Williams, and Truman Capote. The bookstore, which is also now a publishing house, continues to provide a window on literature and the world. The Librairie des Colonnes, which is currently managed by the writer Simon-Pierre Hamelin, was rescued by Pierre Bergé in 2009. Bergé, who loves Tangier and is passionate about literature, believes in the bookstore’s humanist project.
