Acquisition of the Théâtre de l’Athénée

In 1977, Pierre Bergé acquired and renovated the Théâtre de l'Athénée. In the building’s attic, he created a smaller performance space devoted to avant-garde theater. It was designed by Jacques Grange and named after French artist, illustrator, and designer Christian Bérard. Under Bergé’s direction, the theater presented plays by classical authors and emerging playwrights. He produced such plays as Equus by Peter Shaffer for its French premiere. Along with Danièle Cattand, he created Les Lundis musicaux, which showcased the world’s most talented singers on the Théâtre de l'Athénée’s main stage.

In 1982, Bergé sold the Théâtre de l'Athénée to the French government for one symbolic franc.
