Acquisition of the Château Gabriel

We have spent every summer in Marrakech since 1966. But, tired of the heat, we began renting a house near Trouville. The textile firm Bidermann sold us this house. It had been empty and uninhabited since the war. There were holes in the roof. Yves was the one who thought of Proust. We adored the view—one of the most beautiful views in the world. The light in Deauville is magnificent.

Pierre Bergé, cited in Les paradis secrets d’Yves Saint Laurent et de Pierre Bergé (Albin Michel).

Jacques Grange, a friend of the couple, was entrusted with the interior decoration, which Yves Saint Laurent wanted to reflect the world of Marcel Proust. Each room was named after a character in À La Recherche du Temps perdu (In Search of Lost Time). Saint Laurent was Swann, and Pierre Bergé was the Baron de Charlus.
